The past several months of economic problems should have served as a wakeup call to our state and nation. All levels of government continue to spend at levels far surpassing their intake of revenue. All agencies and departments cry fowl if their budgets are cut or even considered for spending reductions. We all must face reality; drastic spending cuts are not only needed, but they are also required if we are to survive. To date, governmental stewardship of the peoples monies have been nearly totally missing.
Looking to the near term, it is obvious that the liberal element in Congress have no intention of cutting spending. Therefore, should the Republicans take control of the house, they must be reminded that they control spending appropriations. President Obama will be there for two more years so sending him conservative spending bills would be futile. This being the reality, the one thing that will have immediate impact is to defund existing bills. This would also include reducing, if not totally eliminating, funding for those departments/agencies that are not absolutely necessary. The Executive Branch should have it's budget reduced at least in the amount of spending for all of the "Czar" positions that have been setup under this administration.Additionally, funding for the Departments of Education and Energy, to name a few, should be totally defunded. It is insane to spend our current financial resourses on departments which are redundant in the 50 mstates, ie; education. In South Carolina there are many school districts with people making six figure incomes. Compound that by what is going on in Washington and the dollar expenditures go out of sight.Just check out the number of municiple, state, and federal license plates you see on vehicles during your every day driving. It boggles the mind.
This state and nation must come to the conclusion that we can not, at least for the short term, afford to fund our "WANTS". During this period we must only be focused on funding for our absolute "NEEDS".
